Major Upgrade Is Being Rolled Out for Google’s NotebookLM Through Gemini Integration

Significant upgrade is being introduced that is reshaping how Google’s productivity and AI tools are used. NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered note-taking and research assistant, is now being integrated directly into the Gemini chatbot, marking a clear shift away from its previously standalone design.

Previously, NotebookLM was largely treated as an isolated tool. Even within Google’s own ecosystem, limited connectivity was provided, and manual steps were required to move information between services. In contrast, Gemini has long been designed to integrate smoothly with Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Keep, making NotebookLM’s separation a notable constraint.

That limitation is now being addressed. A new NotebookLM option is being displayed inside Gemini when the plus (+) icon is tapped while starting a conversation. This option is being shown alongside existing features such as file uploads, Drive imports, photos, and code imports. Through this update, notebooks created in NotebookLM can now be added directly into the Gemini chat interface.

The most important functional change is being seen in how NotebookLM’s existing restrictions are being overcome. At present, NotebookLM does not provide a way for notebooks to be merged or analyzed together. Through the Gemini integration, however, multiple notebooks can now be added and queried at the same time. As a result, Gemini is being used as a bridge between separate documents, allowing cross-notebook analysis. For instance, a notebook containing past examination papers can be uploaded and analyzed to identify commonly repeated questions.

In addition, private information stored within NotebookLM documents can now be combined with external insights. Information from the web can be pulled in while interacting with NotebookLM content inside Gemini, creating a more seamless research experience. At the same time, responses remain grounded in the original source materials contained within the notebooks.

Although no official announcement has yet been made by Google, the feature appears to be undergoing a gradual rollout. Access is expected to be extended to more users in the coming weeks, signaling a move toward a more connected and efficient AI-driven workflow.
