OpenAI Offers Free ChatGPT Go Plan for One Year to Users in India
OpenAI is taking a major step to strengthen its presence in India—one of its fastest-growing markets—by offering the ChatGPT Go plan completely free for one year. The limited-time promotion begins November 4, and both new users and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India are eligible to claim the free 12-month access.
India stands as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, according to CEO Sam Altman. With over a billion internet subscribers, the country presents enormous growth potential. Yet, despite its popularity, turning downloads into revenue remains a challenge. In fact, the ChatGPT app recorded more than 29 million downloads in the 90 days before August but earned just $3.6 million from in-app purchases during that period.
Normally priced at under $5 per month, the ChatGPT Go plan is OpenAI’s most affordable paid tier. It delivers ten times more usage than the free version, allowing users to generate longer responses, create images, and upload files seamlessly. Moreover, it includes enhanced memory that enables more personalized and context-aware conversations.
Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, highlighted that the creativity and rapid adoption from Indian users since the plan’s August launch have been “inspiring.” This enthusiasm, he noted, reinforces OpenAI’s commitment to supporting innovation within India’s growing AI ecosystem.
Meanwhile, competitors are also racing to capture the Indian market. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions, while Google rolled out a one-year AI Pro plan for students.
Amid this competitive wave, OpenAI continues to expand its local presence. The company opened its New Delhi office in August and will host the DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where India-specific announcements are expected.
