Google TV Devices to Get Gemini AI Later This Year

Google announced that it will integrate Gemini, its AI assistant, into Google TV devices later this year, starting with TCL TVs as the first to receive the update. Google unveiled this significant expansion at its Android Show. Following an initial teaser about Gemini’s advancements on Google smart TVs at CES 2025.

When Gemini debuts on Google TV, it will replace the existing Google Assistant tool.
Its functionalities will include providing content recommendations based on voice commands, allowing users to prompt it with requests like “show me action movies that are age-appropriate for kids”. Beyond entertainment, Gemini’s capabilities will also extend to answering “non-recommendation based questions“. For example, it can help children explore questions about the solar system and retrieve relevant YouTube videos.
Despite the excitement, a notable point is the absence of Gemini support for the Google TV Streamer device at launch. Google has not provided information on when, or if, its flagship streaming device will receive the AI tool, leaving its future support unclear and surprising many.
Owners of Google TV smart TVs have been anticipating further announcements since CES 2025, where Google also revealed an enhanced ‘Ambient Mode’ featuring new proximity sensors.

The integration of Gemini is part of a broader rollout across Google’s ecosystem. At the Android Show, Google also teased a new look for Android 16 and confirmed that Gemini’s “smarts” would be coming to cars with built-in Google and Android Auto, as well as its line of WearOS smartwatches.
Google plans to roll out support for WearOS smartwatches and cars with Android Auto in the coming months. The exact roll-out date for Gemini on Google TV devices remains undisclosed by Google.
